Refills & sustainability

Keep the bottle. Refill the rest.

One bottle, refilled - not a new one every month. Concentrated formulas, lighter packaging, and an honest account of what we haven't fixed yet.

WASHED — our story

How refills work

The Apothecary Bottle is the thing you buy once. It is glass, it is meant to live on the side rather than under the sink, and it is sized to the refill pouches so there is no measuring or funnel-wrangling involved. When it runs low, you order a pouch. Pour, rinse the pouch, done. The pouch uses roughly 80% less plastic by weight than the equivalent new bottle, and because it ships flat rather than as a rigid container, more of them fit on a pallet.

The Quarterly Refill takes the remembering out of it. Choose your scents and your cadence, and it arrives before you run out - at 15% less than ordering one at a time. Skip, pause or cancel from your account whenever you like; there is no minimum.

The most sustainable bottle is the one you already own.

Being straight about it

What we haven't solved.

Refill pouches are a genuine reduction, but they are still plastic, and multi-layer pouches are difficult to recycle through household collections. We currently point customers at store drop-off points, which is a workaround rather than an answer. We are testing mono-material alternatives. Our outer cartons are FSC-certified and unlaminated so they go in the household recycling. Our shipping boxes use paper tape and no plastic void fill.

We are not carbon neutral, and we have not bought offsets to be able to say that we are. We would rather spend the money reducing the thing itself - which at our size means concentration, refills and shipping less water - and tell you plainly where we still fall short.

WASHED — who it is for

How we think about it

Three things we work to.

Buy the bottle once

The Apothecary Bottle is designed to be kept. Refill pouches use around 80% less plastic than a new bottle, and cost less too.

Concentrated, not watered down

A smaller dose per wash means less product, lighter shipping and fewer lorries moving water around the country.

Honest about the gaps

We are not carbon neutral and we don't claim to be. Here is what we have changed, and what we haven't worked out yet.

Less packaging, fewer deliveries, a bottle that stays.
